Fast Fashion’s Fatal Consequences

Climate change is real. The deterioration of the environment has multiple causes, one of which is the fast fashion industry. Fast fashion is trendy clothing that is modeled after high fashion runway and celebrity looks and is produced cheaply and quickly. Though it is appealing to consumers because this means that they are able to purchase trendy clothes for low prices and appealing to corporations because they are able to produce multiple styles and sell more, the effects of this system on the environment are dire.

The rapid and constant production by factories owned by fast fashion companies like Zara, Forever21, and H&M contributes a large portion of the world’s carbon emissions. “According to Oxfam, the fast fashion trend produces the same amount of carbon emissions every two minutes as would be produced by a car driving around the world six times.” The fast fashion industry is also cited to produce more emissions than all international flights and shipping activity combined.
